Prisons Chief Announces Reforms

After reports that a mentally ill inmate was killed by guards, Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Mike Crews announced several system-wide reforms, according to the Miami Herald.

Changes will include expanding crisis intervention training for guards, and developing separate re-entry centers for mentally ill inmates, the Herald reports.

And from now on, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and not the DOC will investigate any inmate death that is the result of non-natural causes, according to the Herald. Crews also announced the creation of a transparency database for inmates who die in custody.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
