One Florida city plans to train and equip all its officers with a life-saving drug, Naloxone, so they'll be able to help a drug-overdose victim if they are the first on the scene.
The Lakeland Ledger reports that Winter Haven's police chief plans to have every officer trained and equipped with the drug by the end of this year. Bird hopes to complete training before the end of June.
Naloxone, which is sold under the brand name Narcan, is an opioid antidote first approved by the federal Food and Drug Administration to combat overdoses in the early 1970s.
Naloxone can be injected into a muscle under the skin or administered through an IV or the nasal passages.
