Low-IQ Mom Drops Attempted Murder Plea

A mentally disabled woman who pleaded guilty to attempting to smother her baby withdrew her guilty plea on Monday, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

The case against Violet Hinrichs has been reopened after she shared legal documents indicating she may be legally incompetent, and did not understand the plea tied to charges she repeatedly pressed on her infant son’s chest while they were at Tampa’s St. Joseph’s Hospital, the Times reports.

Hinrichs has an IQ of 60, possibly suffers from a mood disorder, and only reads at a first grade level, according to the Times.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
