Lawmakers Consider Killing PIP

Palm Beach Post

A year ago, the Florida Legislature overhauled no-fault insurance -- “PIP,” for personal injury protection -- saying it was riddled with fraud. But a judge put the overhaul on hold. Now a Senate panel is considering getting rid of PIP altogether in exchange for a traditional auto-insurance system, in which the driver at fault would be responsible for  medical bills, the Florida Current reports.

In other legislative news:

  • As the Palm Beach Post reports, pleas from senior citizens aren’t slowing down the push by some Florida lawmakers who want to ban internet cafes and slots-like game parlors.
  • The House committee in charge of implementing the Affordable Care Act approved a measure to let federal regulators, not the state’s Office of Insurance Regulation, approve insurance rates for the next two years, the Palm Beach Post reports.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
