A man is suing the Sarasota County jail, claiming he told officials he had back injuries and received such poor medical treatment it led to emergency surgery and permanent neurological damage, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports.

Christopher Datta, who was arrested for possession of marijuana and Xanax, is asking for $15,000 in damages, according to the Herald-Tribune. He alleges that the jail health provider, Armor Correctional Health Services, denied him medical attention for his spinal stenosis and bulging disk, the Herald-Tribune reports.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
