Former Florida Surgeon General John Armstrong has been given a job within the Department of Health, Politico Florida reports.

Armstrong will serve as the deputy secretary for administrative services, the department told Politico. Armstrong, who has colon cancer and is on administrative leave, will remain on the payroll and receive state health benefits, Politico reports.

Last week, the Florida Senate failed to confirm Armstrong, first nominated to the post by Gov. Rick Scott in 2012. He resigned on Friday.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
