A clinic owner who used his license as a chiropractor to get around state licensing requirements has been charged

with defrauding multiple insurance companies to the tune of nearly $100,000, according to a news release from the Florida Department of Financial Services. Dr. Troy Godsey was listed as owner of Spine Health Solutions, P.A. in Orlando, but Renata Berriel Deazevedo ran the day-to-day activities of the clinic.

According to the CFO, the clinic would treat patients allegedly hurt in auto accidents, and then fraudulently submit bills under personal injury protection auto insurance coverage. Godsey and Deazevedo now face multiple felony charges for running an unlicensed clinic and the fraudulent insurance claims, and could face prison time.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
