Bills on Health Workforce Coming

Proposals to expand Florida's use of telemedicine and to increase the autonomy of nurse practitioners appear to be cooking in Tallahassee.

Two House members this week mentioned bills they are developing to address Florida's shortage of primary care physicians, according to the News Service of Florida.

The House Select Committee on Health Care Work Force Innovation is expected to consider the controversial idea of expanding the role of nurse practitioners, Rep. Jose Oliva, R-Miami Lakes said. And Rep. Travis Cummings, R-Orange Park, told a Florida Chamber of Commerce gathering he wants to increase use of telemedicine, where health professionals use technology to communicate more with patients.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
