State health officials Thursday reported six new cases of the mosquito-borne Zika Zika virus in Florida, with infections involving pregnant women now up to 131.
Four of the new cases were classified as "travel related," meaning people were infected elsewhere and brought Zika into the state. One of those travel-related cases was in Miami-Dade County, one was in Osceola County and two involved pregnant women, according to information posted on the state Department of Health website.
The state does not report the counties of infected pregnant women. Zika is particularly dangerous to pregnant women because it can cause severe birth defects.
The state Thursday also reported two locally transmitted Zika cases in Miami-Dade County, which has been the center of mosquitoes infecting people in Florida. In all, the state now has a reported 1,120 cases of the virus.
