The State Department of Health reported Tuesday that Florida has four new cases of locally transmitted Zika virus in Miami-Dade County.
Three of the cases are related to a 4.5-square-mile zone in Miami Beach, where health officials have determined Zika is being transmitted by mosquitoes.
The other Miami-Dade case is outside that zone and is being investigated, officials said. State health officials Tuesday also recorded an additional 11 cases of travel-related Zika, meaning those people acquired the disease outside of the state but came to Florida. There were four reported cases in Orange County, three in Hillsborough, two in Osceola and one in Seminole. There also was one case involving pregnant woman.
Zika is particularly dangerous to pregnant women because it can cause severe birth defects. The total cases involving pregnant women rose to 87, with one new travel-related case.
The Department of Health does not say where the pregnant women live. There are also 10 cases of non-Floridians who have contracted the disease, bringing Florida's overall total of Zika cases to 857.
