As Bayfront Health St. Petersburg transformed from a non-profit hospital losing money to a slimmed down for-profit venture with corporate headquarters in Tennessee, it reduced the amount of charity care the hospital provides, the Tampa Bay Times reports.
The hospital saw its revenue increase between 2012 and 2014, but it provided 20 percent less charity care in that time, according to the Times.
The hospital, which sits partly on public land, has been lauded for its indigent care in the past, but that percentage has dropped from 5.1 percent to 3.2 percent, according to the state’s Commission on Healthcare and Hospital Funding.
