Gov. Rick Scott’s budget proposes repealing a law known as “hospital tiering,” which could cause Florida safety-net hospitals to lose millions of dollars a year, the Miami Herald reports.

Hospitals such as Jackson Health System in South Florida and Tampa General Hospital stand to lose $40 million and $15 million, respectively, according to the Herald.

The tiering law requires that counties using local money to earn federal matching dollars share that money with counties that don’t raise their local funds.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
