Coventry Agrees to Deal on HIV Drugs

Following in the footsteps of Cigna, Coventry Health Care has agreed to a deal with the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation to limit the costs of some HIV treatment drugs for consumers to $200 a month, the Miami Herald reports.

A federal civil rights complaint had accused Cigna, Coventry, Humana and Preferred Medical of discriminating against patients with HIV/AIDS by making the prices of four widely used drugs so expensive that patients couldn’t afford them. Coventry isn’t admitting wrongdoing, and says the cap is voluntary. Federal health officials are still looking into the complaint, the Herald reports.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
