Abuse Alleged at Home for Deaf, Autistic Kids

A Mount Dora residential treatment center for deaf and autistic children is being accused of abuse and neglect, NBC News reports.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking at NDA Behavioral Health System, which is also known as the National Deaf Academy. NBC News reports that 10 patients have complained to Disability Rights Florida, an advocacy group, and that three families are filing lawsuits. Two of the lawsuits – and a state report -- allege three patients have died at the center since 2009, according to NBC News.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
