Doubtful HIV-Drug Claims High in South FL

A federal report  found that 24 percent of people with questionable Medicare billing for HIV drugs live in Miami, according to the South Florida Business Journal. That’s remarkable, considering only 2 percent of the nation’s Medicare beneficiaries who get HIV drugs live in the area.

The Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of the Inspector General reviewed $32 million in questionable claims, for 1,600 beneficiaries, the Business Journal reports. It found 880 beneficiaries across the U.S. with no record of an HIV diagnosis received nearly $6 million in HIV drugs from Medicare, the Business Journal reports.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
