Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Jorge Cueto ruled Wednesday that Florida’s workers’ compensation law was unconstitutional and violated employees' fundamental rights, the Miami Heraldreports.
The nearly 80-year-old-law is intended to provide compensation to workers injured on the job, as opposed to having the workers sue the company.
According the the Herald, Cueto said that the purpose of the law has been diminished over the years and it now dramatically under-compensates some injured workers.
The Attorney General’s Office did not intervene in this case,but issued a statement supporting the law, the Herald reports.
