South Fla a New Health Tech Hub

South Florida’s building a reputation as a health care tech hub, as more software companies are tapping on the the region's doctors and patients to test out their latest work.

As the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports, the area is ripe for innovation because it’s home to an aging patient population and is among the nation’s top regions for health care spending per capita. Medicals schools at Nova Southeastern University, the University of Miami and Florida Atlantic University also help.

Many of the area startups are tapping on smart phones , Google Glass and the web-based cloud to help doctors do everything from reading X-rays to order prescriptions, the Sun Sentinel reports.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
