Oil from the BP spill in the Gulf of Mexico near Louisiana has sickened fish as far south as Sanibel Island, according to a study by University of South Florida scientists.
As the Tampa Bay Times reports, the USF researchers used computer modeling to show the path of the oil. BP disputes the methodology, and says oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill didn’t make it near Tampa Bay.
The USF researchers say when they checked the livers of the sick fish, they found signs of hydrocarbons that have a similar chemical signature to the oil from the April 2010 spill.
