Deadly Flu Claims Another Life

Central Florida health officials have confirmed another flu-related death, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

The 63-year-old diabetic woman who died Wednesday is the third patient in Brevard County this year to succumb to the H1N1 strain of the virus.

The flu has been linked to additional deaths across the state, including at least two in Orange County. At least 12 people have died in Alachua County and two others in Broward County, earlier news reports said.

As of February 1, 43 counties were reporting mild activity, according to the Florida Department of Health’s weekly flu surveillance report.  Moderate levels of flu are reported in 10 counties, including Brevard and Orange Counties, and in a cluster of counties in North Central Florida.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
