Will part-time work become the norm of our economy? It could happen, as employers try to avoid the Affordable Care Act mandate to provide coverage for full-time workers, set to take effect in 2015.
A Tampa Bay Times column, which discusses this trend, says one strategy Florida restaurants and fast-food franchises are testing is “sharing” employees. The workers would be able to have full-time jobs split between two or more employers.
But such trends raise concerns over the future of the middle class, since part-time work tends to have stagnant income and little advancement opportunity.
