Kids' Dental Care & More Changes Today

Today’s the beginning of the state’s fiscal year, which means a variety of changes in state law and contracts on health-care matters.

--Medicaid will no longer pay for children’s dental care except through two managed-care companies that have taken over the business under contract. While Florida has ranked last in Medicaid kids’ dental care, some dentists say the state’s efforts to save money are making matters worse, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

--Among scores of new laws Gov. Rick Scott has signed is one that closes a loophole in gun laws for those who have been undergoing inpatient care for mental illness, as the Tampa Bay Timesreports.

--News Service of Florida shows which laws have changed, by category.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
