Public Opinion on Medicaid at Odds With Lawmakers

Results of a new poll of Medicaid opinion in five Deep South states matches those found in Florida three months ago: A majority of those surveyed favor expansion of the health-insurance program for the poor, yet their state lawmakers are blocking it.

Two-thirds of adults in South Carolina, Mississippi, Georgia, Louisiana, and Alabama told surveyors they  support the expansion, according to Kaiser Health News

The survey did not include Florida, but a similar one in this state in February found that 62 percent of those polled said the Legislature should allow the expansion, as the Tampa Bay Times reported.

But as in the other Southern states, that didn’t happen. The Florida Legislature voted against Medicaid expansion, and an alternative plan that won Senate support failed in the House.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
