The Walt Disney Co.'s report of a 32-percent surge in first-quarter profits pleased investors, but it sparked an angry protest from workers' rights groups that have been fighting for paid sick time, The Orlando Sentinel reports.

The groups said Disney has helped lead an employers' effort to block a referendum on the issue. The Legislature passed a bill that would prohibit local sick-time ordinances; the bill awaits Gov. Rick Scott's signature.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
