Infant Dies of Whooping Cough

A six-week-old Orlando infant died of whooping cough last month, becoming the first such death in Orange County in over 20 years, The Orlando Sentinel reports.

Vaccinations for the disease, officially called pertussis, are usually started when babies are two months old. Because that leaves newborns vulnerable, the CDC urges those who are around infants to be vaccinated.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
