The company, declared bankrupt a few weeks ago, was turned over to the Florida Division of Financial Services for liquidation as of April 1. About 800 employees are being laid off, and around 100,000 Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries enrolled in Universal plans are affected.

The Office of Insurance Regulation has accused the company of financial mismanagement, including fraud and diversion of funds. No criminal charges have been filed.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
