A federal grand jury in Miami has subpoenaed financial records from ophthalmologist Salomon Melgen as part of its investigation into New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez, the Washington Postreports.

The South Florida eye doctor, who is originally from the Dominican Republic, contributed about $700,000 to Menendez and other Senate Democrats last year.  Menendez tried to help Melgen when federal health-care officials said he overbilled the government for care at his clinic.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
