Four men, all paralyzed from the chest down for more than two years, have regained voluntary movement in their legs and feet following implantation of an electrical device in their spines, researchers at the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering reported Tuesday.
While only a small number of patients received the implant, and they weren’t able to walk, the success offers hope for the 6 million paralyzed Americans, including the 1.3 million with spinal cord injuries, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
