Botox is known for its role in reducing wrinkles, but it’s gaining popularity for other medical uses, according to the Palm Beach Post.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Botox for only five treatments: for muscle spasms around the eyes, migraines, severe sweating, an abnormal head position condition and cosmetic wrinkle removal.
But doctors in Palm Beach County and elsewhere are using it for off-label uses, for conditions such as psoriasis, adult acne, urinary incontinence and jaw tightness, the Post reports..
Off-label treatments are not FDA-approved, but nearly 20 percent of all medications are used this way, the Post reports.
