Doctors Using Botox Off-Label

Botox is known for its role in reducing wrinkles, but it’s gaining popularity for other medical uses, according to thePalm Beach Post.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Botox for only five treatments: for muscle spasms around the eyes, migraines, severe sweating, an abnormal head position condition and cosmetic wrinkle removal.

But doctors in Palm Beach County and elsewhere are using it for off-label uses, for conditions such as psoriasis, adult acne, urinary incontinence and jaw tightness, the Post reports..

Off-label treatments are not FDA-approved, but nearly 20 percent of all medications are used this way, the Post reports.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
