Patients overwhelmed by the maze of disease diagnosis and treatment are reaching out to professional medical navigators who can offer advice and direction, the Tampa Bay Times reports (paywall alert).
The navigators work for freelance companies and hospital systems such as BayCare, which has about a dozen nurses serving patients with diseases such as breast cancer and heart conditions, the Times reports.
Tampa resident Ernie Gonzalez told the Times that having a navigator by his side would make doctors more cautious about information they do and don’t explain. More so, they “ask the questions you forget to ask.”
