Remember Pulse Shooting By Donating Blood

Jun 13, 2017

One year ago today, 49 people were killed in a shooting at Pulse Night Club in Orlando.

A handful of Pulse survivors have teamed up with One Blood to promote blood donations.

One Blood says it took 441 units to treat Pulse victims.

Jeff Xavier is one of them. He was shot four times and needed more than 40 units of blood.

“The people helped save us. These are random people, I don’t know who those 40 plus people are,” said Xavier. “And they’re all from different races, nationalities and backgrounds, and a little bit of each of them is the reason why I’m here speaking with you today.”

Gerry Realin spent four hours with the dead inside of Pulse Night Club.

He remembers the blood. The smell. The scene was so bad, the eight-member Hazmat team wouldn’t let any other officers help them remove the bodies. That way fewer people had to witness what they saw.

For 20-year-old Patience Carter and her two best friends, that Saturday night of dancing at Pulse night club was literally the best night of her life. And then the shooting started.

Carter immediately dropped to the floor and started scooting backwards. Suddenly, she found herself outside.

“And I didn’t even realize it until I was outside with my hands on the grass and Akyra hovered over me, and I see the sky behind her head, and I’m like: Where’s Tiara?” Carter said.

Mario Perez lives in Miami, but he was in Orlando for a housewarming party Saturday, June 11. After the party, the 34-year-old went to the Pulse nightclub for Latin night.

At 2 a.m., he heard gunshots. Loud. He knew it was real.

"And the minute he started shooting, I got hit from the side, I got grazed by a bullet," Perez says. "My first instinct was to fall to the floor, that's what you're taught to do."

A trophy, Teddy bears, heart-shaped wreaths, and candles are just a few of thousands of items that Orange County Regional History Center staff have begun collecting from the front lawn of the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Orlando. They are taking photos of each item, identifying which items they are next to, placing the non-perishable items in acid-free preservation boxes, then preparing to store them for a larger permanent museum exhibit.
