Hundreds Of Elderly Residents Evacuate In Osceola County

The assisted living facility, Good Samaritan Village in Kissimmee, experienced up to four feet of flooding after Hurricane Irma passed through. On Tuesday morning, 356 elderly residents were evacuated from the facility, while close to 200 residents chose to leave.

Per capita, Osceola County has the worst rates in Florida for asthma hospitalizations and the second worst rate for emergency room visits for asthma.

But a free lung clinic is helping residents breathe easy.

Osceola County Approves Ordinance Decriminalizing Marijuana

Another central Florida county passes an ordinance to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana. Osceola County commissioners passed an ordinance giving law enforcement officers the option to issue a civil infraction instead of arresting someone found with 20 grams of marijuana or less.

Osceola County is getting its first pediatric intensive care unit beds this week. Osceola Regional is opening a six-bed ICU beds for children and eight private pediatric beds, attached to a new pediatric emergency room.

Three unvaccinated horses in Central Florida have caught eastern equine encephalitis.

There are 26 travel-related Zika cases in Florida, according to the latest information from the Florida Department of Health.

Central Florida is now up to three Zika cases. The virus has shown up in Brevard, Osceola and Orange counties. 

On Thursday, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Brevard County’s first Zika case. The virus was caught while traveling to Haiti.

More kids aged 5 to 10 get arrested in Orange and Osceola Counties than any other county in Florida. That’s according to public defender Robert Wesley, who says more of those arrests are happening during the school year than in the summer months. 

Planned Parenthood Asks Justices To Take Up Property Dispute

Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida has asked the state Supreme Court to take up a property dispute that led to a decision preventing abortions from being performed at an Osceola County facility.

Accidental deaths from drug use is up 26 percent in Orange and Osceola counties, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Heroin overtook cocaine as the deadliest street drug last year. Heroin was found in 89 deaths in Orange and Osceola counties last year, that’s compared to 19 heroin-related deaths in 2011.

Cocaine was a close second, with 88 deaths, and was often used in combination with other drugs. That’s an 89 percent increase from 2012.
