The University of South Florida has dropped its $4 million specialty clinic project in the Villages senior community after just six months, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

According to USF officials, the center just couldn't make enough income to succeed, primarily due to having enrolled 6,000 of the needed 20,000 residents in a Medicare managed care plan from United Healthcare.

According to the Times, USF turned over operations to for-profit partner Villages Health in June, so the center will continue to remain open for patients.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
