Shands Settles Case, To Pay $3.25M

Shands Health Care System will pay $3.25 million to settle part of a whistle-blower lawsuit claiming six Shands hospitals billed and received overpayments from the government’s Medicare, Medicaid and Tricare programs, the Orlando Sentinelreports.

This settlement is the second part of a whistle-blower case that resulted in Shands agreeing to pay out $26 million last August, the Sentinel reports. The initial claims involved improper patient admissions.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
