Premed Interns Look for Med School Edge

Students vying for coveted spots at medical schools say premedical internships can gain them an edge in the competitive application process, the Tampa Bay Timesreports.

In 2013, medical schools in the United States accepted and enrolled just 20,000 students, despite having more than 48,000 applications, the Times reports.

For the third summer, a handful of undergraduates experienced what it’s like in a hospital at Florida Hospital North Pinellas, where surgical oncologist Douglas Reintgen lets them shadow, the Times reports. Reintgen, who also teaches at the University of South Florida's Morsani College of Medicine, even let students remove a suspicious looking mole from his neck.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
