More Scrutiny on Kids' Boarding Homes, Not ALFs

The Legislature passed a bill imposing some mild constraints on religious homes and boarding schools for children following an expose last year, the Tampa Bay Times reports. The homes still don't have to have state licenses, but the Florida Association of Christian Child Caring Agencies will have to disclose abuses to the state.

Another initiative to protect the vulnerable failed to win House approval, even though it passed unanimously in the Senate, the Florida Current reports. It would have tightened regulations on Assisted Living Facilities (ALFs) that house the elderly and disabled, the subject of a Miami Herald investigation two years ago.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
