Judge with Alcohol Woes Fighting for Job

Broward County Judge Gisele Pollack is asking the Judicial Qualifications Commission to give her a second chance, following a string of alcohol-related incidents, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

She was suspended in May for showing up at work drunk twice; for leaving a voluntary substance abuse program, and for a DUI-related car crash. She admits responsibility for all the charges, though she is expected to plead not guilty in the DUI case this week, according to the Sun Sentinel.

The JQC and the Supreme Court will hold a hearing once the criminal charges are resolved. Last week, Pollack filed paperwork with the Florida Supreme Court, which have the final say whether she will be reprimanded or will lose the job she has held since 2004, according to the Sun Sentinel.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
