Some hospitals that have been bought out by Health Management Associates (HMA) -- including St. Petersburg's Bayfront Medical Center -- may get an unwelcome surprise,The Tampa Bay Timesreports. There are rumors that HMA is to be acquired by a Tennessee-based company, and HMA’s largest investor has proposed ousting the corporation’s board.
Bert Fish Medical Center has also decided to negotiate exclusively with HMA, The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports, although there are still questions about how much taxpayers will contribute and how much say they will have in the future of the hospital.
Meanwhile, Tampa General Hospital is re-evaluating the security of patient records after a Tampa woman’s medical files were breached and publicized by a hospital nurse, The Tampa Bay Times reports.
And in Miami Dade, Jackson Health System says it needs $830 million in construction for repairs, upgrades and new equipment,The Miami Herald reports.
