A prominent Fort Lauderdale cardiologist under investigation for Medicaid and Medicare fraud signed a new contract with Broward Health featuring a pay cut and a new agreement to treat poor patients, the Florida Bulldog reports.

Dr. Michael Chizner signed the five-year contract, which lowers his salary from $1.2 million to $867,200, in December in order to avoid being terminated on Jan. 2, according to the Florida Bulldog. He is the Chief Medical Director of the Heart Center for Excellence at Broward Health.

The change was in response to an ongoing anti-kickback inquiry by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Justice.

In 2011, Chizner served as chairman of the Florida Board of Medicine

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
