FL: Epicenter for National Pill Racket

Orlando Sentinel

An investigation by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration uncovered the source of a national pill-trafficking ring: Encore Pharmacy in Kissimmee, the Orlando Sentinel reports. Investigators say part of the scam involved fraudulent Medicare claims. Meanwhile, a jury acquitted three doctors and one investor in a case involving thousands of fraudulent prescriptions for oxycodone at a Jacksonville pill mill, the Florida Times-Union reports.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
