Fecal Transplant Study Underway

Talk about alternative treatments.

Fecal transplants, still considered experimental, are being tried at a dozen hospitals around the country for stubborn Clostridium difficile infections that don't respond to antibiotics. One of those centers, as the Sun Sentinel reports, is Boca Raton Regional.

Gastroenterologists Andrew Zwick and Lawrence Fiedler persuaded Boca Regional to start a fecal transplant program six months ago -- controversial, since it hasn't been approved by the FDA.

"There is such an ick factor that a lot of doctors and hospitals won't do it," Zwick told the Sentinel. "This little hospital in little Boca Raton is not only doing something important, it's brave."
