Device Company Charged for Kickbacks

The U.S. Department of Justice claims a company with a Florida connection paid spinal surgeons kickback fees for using its devices, the Miami Heraldreports (paywall alert).

The two lawsuits filed under the federal False Claims Act allege that Apex Medical Technologies and Kronos Spinal Technologies billed Medicare for devices used for spinal fusion surgeries, but the doctors using them were being illegally compensated, the Herald reports.

Both companies are based at the same Jacksonville address.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
