Changes Coming in Cancer, HIV Treatment

Moffitt Cancer Center has created an Integrated Mathematical Oncology Department led by Dr. Robert Gatenby, an American radiologist and math whiz, Florida Trend reports.

The idea, says Gatenby, is to formulate a model that enables "adaptive therapy" -- enough chemo to reduce the aggressive tumor cells, but not so much that it wipes out cells that are sensitive to the drugs.

Moffitt's department is thought to be the first such freestanding mathematical oncology department at a cancer center in the U.S., Trend reports.

Meanwhile, asThe Miami Herald reports, Florida International Researchers think they may have found a way  to get HIV anti-retroviral drugs across the blood-brain barrier. (Editor's note: May be blocked by paywall.)

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
