The Tampa Bay Times obtained a cache of prosecutors’ documents on Joshua and SharynHakken, the parents charged with kidnaping their two young sons from their grandparents in Tampa and sailing to Cuba with them to seek political asylum. The documents show evidence that mental illness has been mentioned in connection with each of the parents, who picked up some themes from Tea Party and right-wing blogs about mind control, secret government plots and the “Illuminati.” Also mentioned in the documents: the couple’s heavy use of marijuana, which health experts said could have accelerated  symptoms of mental illness.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
