34 in FL Nabbed in Medicare Fraud Sweep

El Nuevo Herald

The Medicare Fraud Strike Force arrested 34 people in Florida as part of a nationwide sweep.

As the Tampa Tribune reports, four of the clinics accused of submitting false claims to Medicare for $2.5 million share a Tampa address. In Miami, an actor and his wife were among 25 charged with bilking the Medicare system out of millions of dollars, the Miami Herald reports.

The U.S. Department of Justice says the scams across the country involved about $223 million in false billings.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
