As a nationwide investigation of hundreds of hospitals by the U.S. Department of Justice wraps up, two more South Florida hospitals are among those settling False Claims Act charges.

Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach and Cleveland Clinic Florida Health System in Weston were accused by of improperly billing Medicare for implantable cardioverter defibrillators or ICDs, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Mount Sinai paid $1.9 million to settle the allegations, according to the Department of Justice. The Cleveland Clinic settlement of $1.6 million covers six facilities and includes the Florida location.

Originally founded in December 2006 as an independent grassroots publication dedicated to coverage of health issues in Florida, Health News Florida was acquired by WUSF Public Media in September 2012.
